総合南東北病院は仙台の南の岩沼市にあり、仙台以南の医療圏の基幹病院として地域の医療に貢献している。
当院の基礎は脳神経外科に始まり、現在でも病院の中枢の診療科である。最近は上部消化器疾患、循環器科などが充実し、外科、整形外科、形成外科、泌尿器など外科手術が盛んに行われている。
脳神経外科は主として脳血管障害と脊椎脊髄疾患患者を対象とし、年間500件程度の手術実績がある。脳血管障害は開頭術に加え、血管内治療を積極的に行っている。脊椎脊髄手術は低侵襲手術を基本として、早期治療、早期退院を目指した患者本位の手術を行っている。
当院のもう１つの特徴は、回復期リハビリテーションの充実である。スタッフは70名を超え、365日リハビリを行う体制ができている。
外国人留学生も多く、特にアジア、中近東から参加している。
