Peripheral Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation 【Kanazawa Medical University Hospital】

A minimally invasive treatment program for knee pain using ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve radiofrequency therapy, requiring no hospitalization and allowing short-term stay.

This program is a minimally invasive, short-stay treatment for knee osteoarthritis using ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve radiofrequency ablation (CRFA).

By identifying the nerves supplying the knee joint and selectively blocking pain transmission, pain relief can be achieved without the need for hospitalization or general anesthesia.

The procedure takes approximately 30–45 minutes, and patients can walk on the same day.

It is suitable for patients who wish to avoid or delay total knee replacement surgery, as well as elderly patients with higher surgical risks.

The procedure is performed by board-certified orthopedic specialists experienced in knee treatment and ultrasound-guided techniques.

Eligibility Criteria/Exclusions for Treatment
This program is intended for patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis who experience chronic knee pain and have not achieved sufficient improvement with conservative treatment. There is no age restriction; however, patients must be in stable general health. Wheelchair access is available. Patients who have undergone joint replacement surgery, have severe neurological disorders, or have active infections may not be eligible. Previous treatment history is not a limiting factor.
Remarks
Orthopedics https://www.kanazawa-med.ac.jp/~orthoped/ 【Treatment Schedule】 A detailed consultation is conducted on the first visit, and the treatment date is determined. On the same day, preoperative tests (blood tests, X-rays, and MRI if necessary) and a test block for eligibility assessment are performed to evaluate expected treatment effectiveness and safety. If deemed appropriate, ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve radiofrequency therapy is performed. This procedure does not require general anesthesia and can be performed on an outpatient basis. However, for international patients, a 1-night, 2-day stay option is available for postoperative observation. After the procedure, walking ability and possible complications are assessed, and patients may return home once safety is confirmed.
Precautions / Contraindications
This treatment is intended for pain relief and does not correct the underlying joint deformity.

The duration and degree of effectiveness may vary between individuals.

Patients taking anticoagulant medications must inform us in advance.

The procedure is not suitable for patients with active infections, severe bleeding tendencies, or uncontrolled serious systemic conditions.

Pregnant patients are generally not eligible for this treatment.
