Total Knee Replacement Surgery 【Kanazawa Medical University Hospital】

A treatment program for knee pain that does not improve with conservative therapy, aiming to restore function and relieve pain through joint replacement surgery, thereby improving walking ability and quality of life (QOL).

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis is a standard treatment aimed at relieving pain and restoring walking function in patients whose symptoms do not sufficiently improve with conservative therapy.

At our hospital, board-certified orthopedic specialists provide comprehensive care, from preoperative evaluation to surgery and postoperative rehabilitation. We utilize robot-assisted surgery, enabling highly precise implant placement based on each patient’s bone structure and soft tissue balance. This approach is expected to improve postoperative function and support faster recovery.

We also place strong emphasis on perioperative management and infection prevention to ensure high standards of safety. In addition, patient education is prioritized to create an environment where patients can undergo treatment with confidence.

Eligibility Criteria/Exclusions for Treatment
Patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee who do not achieve sufficient improvement with conservative treatment, and who experience pain while walking or difficulty in daily activities, are considered candidates. There is no strict age limit; however, patients must be in a general condition suitable for general anesthesia and surgery. Wheelchair access is available, and patients with limited mobility can be accommodated. Treatment may be postponed or deemed unsuitable in cases of active infections (such as skin or urinary tract infections) or poor overall health condition.
Remarks
Orthopedics https://www.kanazawa-med.ac.jp/~orthoped/ 【Treatment Schedule】 At the initial visit, clinical examination and imaging (X-ray, and MRI if necessary) are performed to determine surgical indication. If surgery is indicated, preoperative tests (blood tests, ECG, chest X-ray, etc.) are conducted to assess overall health. Consultations with other departments may be arranged as needed to ensure safe surgery. Hospitalization typically occurs one day before surgery, and total knee replacement surgery is performed the following day. Postoperatively, rehabilitation begins the next day, with early mobilization and walking training. The hospital stay is approximately 2–3 weeks, depending on the patient’s recovery.
Precautions / Contraindications
Please inform us in advance of any medications you are taking, especially anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs.

If you have any active infections (such as fever, skin infection, urinary tract infection, or dental infection), surgery may need to be postponed. A dental check-up is recommended prior to surgery.

Underlying conditions such as diabetes must be well controlled before surgery.

Postoperative rehabilitation will be required for a certain period. Please also note in advance that sitting in a traditional kneeling position may become difficult after surgery, and that artificial joints have a limited lifespan.
