Cancer immunotherapy
Cancer immunotherapy is thought to restore immunity and suppress the growth of cancer cells through the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors, which prevent the brakes on the attack against cancer cells.
Recent research has shown that cancer cells escape immune attack by utilizing the mechanism of human immunity to apply the brakes to prevent them from attacking their own cells.
Immune checkpoint inhibitors are drugs that prevent the brakes on the attack on cancer cells. This action is believed to restore immunity and inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Drug types include nivolumab (Opdivo®), ipilimumab (Yervoy®), and pembrolizumab (Keytruda®).
