Treatment of Atherosclerosis Using Autologous Adipose-Derived Stem Cells【 Grand Green Osaka Umekita Clinic】
Patients diagnosed with atherosclerosis who continue to take medication but have not achieved the expected improvement in laboratory values or symptoms
Patients concerned about medication-related side effects and looking for alternative treatment options
Patients experiencing symptoms suggestive of poor circulation, such as coldness or numbness in the hands and feet, or pain while walking
Patients who wish to reduce their future risk of myocardial infarction or stroke
- Program details
- Atherosclerosis is a condition in which the arteries become hardened and narrowed.
It may progress with few noticeable symptoms and can contribute to serious cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke.
Conventional treatment has mainly focused on medications intended to slow disease progression, while repairing blood vessels that have already been damaged remains difficult.
In this treatment, stem cells contained in the patient’s own adipose tissue are collected from the abdomen or thigh, cultured for approximately one month, and expanded to approximately 100–200 million cells before being returned to the body by intravenous infusion. Stem cells are considered to have a tendency to migrate toward sites of tissue injury, known as the homing effect, and to secrete substances that may help regulate inflammation as well as growth factors involved in tissue repair and the formation of new blood vessels.
Through these mechanisms, the treatment aims to reduce vascular inflammation, promote new blood vessel formation in tissues with reduced blood flow, improve symptoms associated with atherosclerosis, and help suppress disease progression.

Medical Consultation and Eligibility Assessment
Blood tests and other examinations are performed to confirm whether the treatment can be administered safely.
Adipose Tissue Collection (approximately 30 minutes, outpatient)
A small amount of adipose tissue is collected under local anesthesia from a discreet area of the abdomen or thigh. There may be some pain from the initial anesthetic injection, but there is generally little pain during the procedure.
Cell Culture (approximately 1 month)
Stem cells are isolated and expanded to approximately 100–200 million cells at a specialized facility. Quality testing is performed before the cells are released for administration.
Intravenous Infusion (approximately 1 hour)
The cells are slowly infused through a vein in the arm. After the infusion, the patient rests at the clinic for approximately 60 minutes before leaving.
Follow-up (at 1, 3, and 6 months)
Changes after treatment are assessed by monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, carotid ultrasound findings, and other relevant parameters.
