Surgical Treatment for Spinal Disorders (e.g., Scoliosis) (Shonan Fujisawa Tokushukai Hospital)
Since its establishment, our center has performed 6,348 spinal surgeries (as of February 28, 2026).
Among these, more than 1,850 surgeries for scoliosis have been performed for patients ranging from young individuals to the elderly.
In our hybrid spinal operating room, navigation systems are utilized to ensure safety and precision. To date, more than 40,000 pedicle and vertebral screws have been safely inserted.
Among them, over 5,000 screws were placed using robot-assisted surgery.
Patients with scoliosis visit our center not only from across Japan but also from overseas, including Vietnam, the United States, Australia, and Russia.
We will continue striving to further improve the quality and outcomes of treatment, providing safe and reliable medical care for patients suffering from spinal disorders.
【Features】
Our center was established in 2004 and specializes in spinal surgery.
We place particular emphasis on scoliosis surgery, providing treatment for patients ranging from children to the elderly.
To enhance surgical safety, we utilize advanced computer-assisted surgical systems.
■ Hybrid Operating Room Dedicated to the Spine Center and Scoliosis Center
Multi-axis CT-like imaging system ARTIS pheno
Spinal navigation system Curve
Spinal robotic system Cirq
Traction correction device CORRECTION BOX
Developed independently by Center Director Dr. Ehara
■ Medical Materials Used in Spinal Surgery
The screws and rods used for spinal correction and fixation are made of titanium alloy.
【Reasons for Using Titanium Alloy】
Does not corrode inside the body
Lightweight (each screw weighs approximately 5–6 grams)
Does not cause allergic reactions
Compatible with MRI examinations
【Durability】
Titanium alloy does not react with water and has excellent corrosion resistance. Therefore, it does not deteriorate and can remain in the body for long periods without adverse effects.
■ Surgical Techniques for Scoliosis
The primary procedure performed is posterior correction and fusion surgery.
For younger patients (ages 10–20), we may perform minimally invasive anterior correction and fusion surgery with endoscopic assistance.
Since the incision is made near the underarm, the surgical scar is less noticeable. This technique is particularly advantageous for treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, which is common among young women.
However, this procedure may not be suitable for patients with severe or long spinal curves.
