Osaka Heavy Ion Therapy Center (HIMAK)
This is Osaka’s first heavy ion radiotherapy facility located in central Osaka City, where scanning beam irradiation is performed in all treatment rooms.
The Osaka Heavy Ion Therapy Center, located in central Osaka City, is the first heavy ion radiotherapy facility in Osaka. All three treatment rooms are equipped with scanning beam irradiation, which precisely delivers a narrow heavy ion beam extracted from an accelerator to “paint” the tumor.
To address tumor motion caused by respiration, a real-time tumor tracking irradiation system has been introduced, enabling more accurate treatment by minimizing positional deviations during irradiation.
Treatment Room 1 provides irradiation from horizontal and 45-degree angles, while Treatment Rooms 2 and 3 offer irradiation from horizontal and vertical directions. Real-time tumor tracking irradiation is available in Treatment Rooms 1 and 2.
Furthermore, the center collaborates with nearby institutions such as the Osaka International Cancer Institute and other designated cancer care hospitals to provide a comprehensive cancer treatment system.
For medical consultations, patients residing in Japan are required to have a referral from a medical institution. Overseas patients are generally required to be referred through medical tourism agencies affiliated with the center.
The Osaka Heavy Ion Therapy Center began treatment in October 2018 and has treated over 6,000 domestic and international patients as of the end of January 2026.
